Post office

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A post office is a public facility that provides essential mail services. It acts as a retailer for many different items. People visit these locations to send letters and parcels. They also use them to buy postage stamps, packaging, and stationery. Many post offices provide additional government services. These can include processing passport applications or collecting fees for road tax. The person who manages a post office is called a postmaster.

Postal facilities function in several distinct ways. A General Post Office, or GPO, often serves as the national headquarters for a postal service. Some buildings are used only for processing mail. These are known as sorting offices or delivery offices. They often contain a large area called a sorting hall. Other facilities are called mail exchanges. These integrate mail processing with transportation hubs like airports or railway stations.

Modern systems also include unstaffed options for convenience. Mailboxes and post office boxes allow for drop-offs and pickups outside of regular hours. In 2001, Germany's Deutsche Post introduced the Pack-Station for package delivery. This system allows for both dropping off and picking up items. In the 2000s, the United States Postal Service began installing Automated Postal Centers, or APCs. These machines can print postage and accept small packages when offices are closed.

Organized mail systems have existed for thousands of years. Evidence shows Egyptian pharaohs used royal couriers as early as 2400 BCE. The Persian Empire used a system called Chapar Khaneh along the Royal Road. Historians credit leaders like Cyrus the Great or Darius I with these systems. In the 2nd century BCE, the Mauryan and Han dynasties established similar systems in India and China. These early methods relied on mounted couriers to carry important messages.

The Roman Empire also developed a sophisticated network called the Cursus Publicus. The emperor Augustus is credited with regularizing this transportation and courier network. Local officials had to provide couriers for the entire course of a message. Later, the emperor Diocletian created two parallel systems. One system used horses or mules for urgent correspondence. The other system used sturdy oxen to transport bulk shipments. This system remained largely intact until the 6th century.

In the 17th century, the term "post office" became common in England. This happened shortly after England passed laws for private mail services in 1635. During this era, post riders were placed every few hours along post roads. These riders stayed at posting houses, also called post houses. These locations were often stables or inns. They allowed important letters to travel without delay between major cities. The oldest functioning post office is in Sanquhar, Scotland. It has operated continuously since 1712.

Postal history has also shaped how we name our towns. In the 19th century, the United States Post Office Department required unique names. They did not want different post offices to have the same name within one state. This led many small communities to rename themselves after their local post office. In rural Canada, people used the "way office" system. Villagers left letters at a way office to be taken to the nearest post office. These systems helped connect even the most distant areas to the wider world.
