Mail systems are very old. Long ago, kings in Egypt used riders to carry news. In Persia, they had a system of roads and stations. The Romans also had a way to move messages. They used horses for fast news. They used oxen for heavy shipments.

In the 1600s, the term "post office" began to be used. In England, riders on horses moved between towns. In the 1800s, people in America used stores to get mail. Sometimes, small towns were named after their post offices. Today, many places have machines for mail. These machines work even when the office is closed.
