An address tells people where a building or land is. It uses street names and numbers. It also uses codes like a postal code. These codes help sort mail quickly.

Long ago, most houses had no numbers. In the 1700s, London began numbering streets. This helped the mail system grow. In 1857, London began using district codes. These were early versions of postcodes. By 1871, many houses in London had new numbers.

Different places use different ways to name streets. In some North American cities, streets have numbers. In the UK and Ireland, some houses have names instead of numbers. For example, a house might be called "Smith Cottage."

In many cities, streets follow a grid. This means they cross like a pattern of squares. Some cities use quadrants. These are four parts of a city. They use directions like "NE" for northeast. Addresses help us find homes and help the mail reach us.
