A neighbourhood is a small part of a city or town.

It can be just one street. It can also be a larger area. People in a neighbourhood often talk to each other face-to-face. This helps them build a social community.

Long ago, neighbourhoods helped run cities. In some old Islamic cities, people handled their own cleaning. They also looked after births and marriages. These groups were not run by big governments. In the Tang period in China, things were different. Officials in the capital city of Chang'an controlled the neighbourhoods.

Neighbourhoods often had special groups. Some people lived together because they had the same jobs. Others lived together because of their religion or where they came from. Many people moved from the country to the city. They moved near family to feel safe.

Today, people still work together. Some use neighbourhood watches to stay safe.

Others join groups to improve their local parks or homes. These groups help make the area a better place to live.
