A neighbourhood is a special part of a larger place. It can be a small area like one street. It can also be a larger part of a town or city.

These areas are more than just places on a map. They are social communities where people interact face-to-face. Residents often share common values in these settings. They might socialize youth or help maintain social control. This makes the neighbourhood a functional social network.

Neighbourhoods work by bringing people together through daily life. They are often local social units. These units are larger than a single household. In many historical cities, neighbourhoods were not run by big governments. For example, in some old Islamic cities, neighbours handled their own cleaning. They also managed things like births and marriages. These tasks were done informally by the people living there.

History shows that neighbourhoods have always existed. Archaeologists find evidence of social neighbourhoods in the earliest cities.

Scholars like Lewis Mumford noted that neighbourhoods appear wherever people live together in permanent homes. In the Tang period in China, the capital city was Chang'an. In that city, neighbourhoods were also administrative districts. State officials in Chang'an carefully controlled life and activity at the neighbourhood level. This shows how different cities managed their local areas.

Many different types of neighbourhoods exist in history and today. Some neighbourhoods are formed by people with the same jobs. Others are defined by religion or where people moved from. In the past, people moving from rural areas to cities often lived near relatives.

In mainland China, a neighbourhood can include 2,000 to 10,000 families. These families are often split into smaller groups of 100 to 600. These smaller units are then supervised by a residents' committee.

Today, neighbourhoods help people connect with services and each other. In the United States and Canada, people use neighbourhood associations. They might use neighbourhood watches to help keep their streets safe.

In the United Kingdom, communities use neighbourhood planning to help their areas grow. Some people even work to create age-friendly communities for older adults. Whether through a park or a community center, neighbourhoods remain vital parts of our world.
