A neighbourhood is a localized community within a larger area. This area can be a town, a city, a suburb, or even a rural region. Sometimes, a neighbourhood is as small as a single street and its buildings.

Researchers define neighbourhoods in two ways: spatially and functionally. Spatially, they are specific geographic areas. Functionally, they are sets of social networks. These are the settings where people interact face-to-face. Residents use these spaces to share values, socialize youth, and maintain social control.

Neighbourhoods function through social interaction among nearby residents. They act as local social units that are larger than a single household. In many historical settings, these units were not controlled by city or state officials. For example, in some historical Islamic cities, neighbourhoods handled municipal functions informally. This included cleaning, upkeep, and the social regulation of births and marriages. This shows how communities can manage themselves without a central government.

Most ancient and historical cities also used administrative districts. These districts were used by officials for taxation and record-keeping. Administrative districts are typically larger than neighbourhoods. Their boundaries might cut across different neighbourhood divisions. However, sometimes these districts and neighbourhoods were the same. In the Tang period, the Chinese capital city of Chang'an used this system. In Chang'an, neighbourhoods were official districts. State officials carefully controlled all activity at the neighbourhood level.

Neighbourhoods often show social specialization or differentiation. In many past cities, ethnic neighbourhoods were very important. Economic specialists, like merchants or craft producers, often lived together. In societies with many religions, neighbourhoods might be specialized by religion. Migration also helped create distinct neighbourhoods. In preindustrial cities, people moving from rural areas to cities often lived near relatives. This helped create strong social cohesion within specific local areas.

In mainland China, the term has a specific administrative meaning. A neighbourhood is an urban division found below the district level. These neighbourhoods can encompass between 2,000 and 10,000 families. Within these areas, families are grouped into smaller quarters of 100 to 600 families. These quarters are supervised by a residents' committee. These committees then subdivide into even smaller groups of fifteen to forty families.

Modern sociology also studies neighbourhoods as sites for service delivery. This is called a service intervention. These efforts aim to provide quality local services and increase local ownership. In the United States and Canada, neighbourhoods often have official status. This comes through neighbourhood associations or neighbourhood watches.

These groups might regulate lawn care or host block parties. They also work to provide community security and neighbourhood parks.

In the United Kingdom, the term is often used for local service provision. For example, local boroughs might use neighbourhoods to divide areas for services. The Localism Act 2011 gave communities the right to participate in neighbourhood planning. This allows them to help shape how their local area develops. Additionally, urban designers use the neighbourhood as a unit of analysis. They study them to create Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. This helps support older adults who may have a narrower life space.
