Road

A road is a thoroughfare used to move traffic from one place to another. While many people use the terms "road" and "street" interchangeably, they serve different purposes in urban design. A street is primarily used for local access to buildings and homes. In contrast, a road is often a larger route designed for travel between different areas. Roads can take many forms, including parkways, tollways, and highways. Some are public, while others are private and controlled by individuals or companies.

Modern roads are complex engineered structures built to allow smooth travel. The construction process begins with creating a continuous right-of-way or roadbed. Engineers must overcome geographic obstacles like hills or rivers. This often involves removing earth and rock through digging or blasting. Workers may also need to remove vegetation or old buildings to clear the path. After the site is prepared, a surveyor sets out the alignment of the road. This ensures the curves and slopes, known as gradients, are safe for vehicles.

To make a road strong, engineers build it in several distinct layers. The foundation is the subgrade, which is the native material found underneath. On top of the subgrade, they lay a sub-base layer, often made of cement-based material. Above that, they add a base course and a paver base. The final surface is the pavement, which provides the smooth layer for tires.

Engineers must also include storm drainage systems. These systems carry runoff from rain to a creek, river, or the sea to prevent flooding.

Roads come in many different types based on how they are used. Controlled-access highways, such as motorways or freeways, allow for high-speed travel with limited entry points. Tollways require a fee for use, often to pay for construction or maintenance. Some roads are designed specifically for certain users, like bike paths or shared-use paths. In many cities, roads also include sidewalks for pedestrians and shoulders for emergency stops.

Even the edges of a road, called verges, play a role in the overall design.

Humanity has been building paths for thousands of years. Some researchers believe the first roads began as animal trails. By 10,000 BC, humans were using rough pathways for travel. The oldest known paved road was built in Egypt between 2600 and 2200 BC. In England, people created "corduroy roads" using logs as early as 4000 BC.

A significant milestone occurred in 500 BC when Darius I the Great built a massive road system for the Persian Empire. This included the Royal Road, which connected Sardis to Susa and remained in use long after Roman times.

Ancient empires used roads to maintain power and move armies. The Roman Empire was famous for its straight, strong stone roads. At its peak, the empire had 29 major roads covering 78,000 kilometers of paved surfaces.

Much later, in the 8th century AD, the Arab Empire built sophisticated roads. In Baghdad, many roads were paved with tar. This tar was produced from petroleum through a process called destructive distillation. In the modern era, the Autostrada dei Laghi in Italy became the first controlled-access highway in 1924.

Road definitions can vary significantly depending on the country and local laws. In Australia, a road is an area developed for driving or riding motor vehicles. This definition includes road-related areas like green spaces and cyclist zones. In New Zealand, the definition is even broader and can include river beds or beaches. In the United Kingdom, the Highways Act 1980 defines a road as any length of highway to which the public has access. This can include bridges, footpaths, and even private driveways.

Roads are essential systems that connect our entire world. They facilitate the movement of people, goods, and services across vast distances. From ancient stone paths to modern high-speed motorways, roads have shaped how civilizations grow. They connect remote villages to large cities and allow for the development of tourism. As technology changes, our roads continue to evolve to meet new needs. They remain one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in human history.
