A gang is a group of associates, friends, or family members with a defined leadership and internal organization. These groups often identify with or claim control over specific territory within a community. They engage in illegal activities, which may include violence, often forming a type of organized crime. While the term is frequently used to describe criminal groups, it can also refer to any close or organized group of people. Depending on how the word is used, it can have neutral, positive, or negative connotations.

Gangs operate through various structures that depend largely on their size. Some groups are small, containing only five or ten members, while others number in the thousands. Large gangs often break into smaller subsets known as cliques or sets. These smaller groups help the larger organization expand its reach and control more territory. Within these hierarchies, an individual's status is often determined by several factors. These include their age, physical structure, ability to fight, and their willingness to use violence. A person's arrest record and their ability to provide money for the gang also impact their standing.

Different types of gangs exist, each with unique specialties and cultures. Mafias are among the most famous, often acting as a shadow government for the criminal underworld. Groups like the Sicilian Cosa Nostra or the Italian-American Mafia settle disputes and oversee illicit agreements. They provide a form of protection for those involved in illegal markets, though they sometimes use extortion instead. Other groups, known as narcos or drug cartels, focus primarily on the illegal drug trade. Examples include the Medellin Cartel in Colombia and the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico. These organizations sometimes use paramilitaries or engage in narcoterrorism.

Street gangs are another distinct type, often formed by youths in urban areas. These groups are known for street fighting and gang warfare to control specific facilities or enterprises. In the United States, well-known street gangs include the Bloods and the Crips. Other racial or ethnic street gangs include the Latin Kings and the Trinitario. Biker gangs, such as the Hells Angels or the Outlaws, use motorcycle clubs as conduits for criminal enterprises. These are often called outlaw motorcycle gangs because they do not follow the rules of the American Motorcyclist Association.

History shows that gang activity has appeared in many different eras and places. In the 17th century, London was terrorized by organized gangs like the Mims and the Hectors. These factions often wore colored ribbons to distinguish themselves from one another. In the United States, gang history began on the East Coast following the American Revolution in 1783. The 40 Thieves, a street gang in New York City, emerged around the late 1820s. As rural populations immigrated to urban areas during the mid-nineteenth century, gangs became a major concern for city leaders. In the Old West, organized crime syndicates like the Wild Bunch became prominent.

Specific historical events have caused gangs to grow rapidly in certain regions. In the United States, the era of Prohibition caused a massive boom in gang emergence. For example, Chicago had over 1,000 gangs during the 1920s. In France, groups like the Apaches were active during the Belle Époque. Some gangs also form within the prison system for mutual protection. The Mexican Mafia is an example of a prison gang that uses various affiliates or chapters across different state systems. Many large gangs in Chicago actually originated from these correctional facilities.

Some groups follow unique ideologies that set them apart from traditional criminal organizations. Punk gangs are composed of members who follow specific political or philosophical beliefs. Their ideologies can range from the radical left to the alt-right. These differences in belief can lead to conflicts between rival punk gangs. Unlike most street gangs that fight for profit or territory, punk gangs may engage in confrontations during social protests. Additionally, some groups called vigilantes or autodefensas claim to fight gang influence. However, these groups often share similar characteristics and actions with the gangs they oppose.
