The Sicilian Mafia is a complex criminal organization originating on the island of Sicily.

It emerged during the mid-19th century as a way to provide local protection and control over land and agriculture. Over many decades, this group evolved into a massive criminal network. It moved from controlling farms into infiltrating politics, construction, and finance. Eventually, the organization expanded into drug trafficking and money laundering. Today, the term 'mafia' is often used to describe any criminal network with similar structures and interests.

The organization operates through a specific mechanism of private protection.

It is not a single, centralized group with one leader. Instead, it functions as a federation of independent gangs. These groups are known as families, clans, or cosca. Each family claims sovereignty over a specific territory. This territory might be a small village or a neighborhood, called a borgata, within a larger city. They act like a cartel of private firms that sell protection services. They use their reputation to distinguish themselves from common criminals.

There are several ways to understand how the Mafia functions. Some experts describe it as an industry of violence. Others, like sociologist Diego Gambetta, call it a group of private protection firms. The central activity is the arbitration of disputes. This means they settle arguments between criminals to keep illegal agreements moving. They also oversee illicit transactions to ensure no one is cheated. Because they provide these services, they act as a sort of government for the underworld. However, they only serve specific clients who pay them for protection.

The history of the group involves many different names and origins. The word 'mafia' originated in Sicily and may relate to the word mafiusu. This term can mean swagger, boldness, or bravado. Some scholars suggest the word might even have Arabic roots from when Sicily was an Islamic emirate. A popular 1863 play about a prison gang helped make the term famous in Italy. Members often call their organization Cosa Nostra, which means "our thing" or "our cause." This specific name was revealed to the U.S. Senate during the 1963 Valachi hearings.

Understanding the Mafia requires looking at its social significance.

Some researchers argue the Mafia exists because the government fails to provide adequate protection. In the past, Sicily lacked clear property rights and efficient courts. When the legal system is seen as inefficient, people may turn to the Mafia to settle disputes. However, the Mafia actually increases the amount of distrust in society. It creates an incentive for protected people to cheat those without protection. This cycle makes it harder for a community to cooperate or compete healthily.

Important figures have shaped our knowledge of this organization. For a long time, people thought the Mafia was just a way of behaving rather than a formal group. This changed through judicial investigations and the testimony of turncoats, known as pentiti.

In 1984, Tommaso Buscetta spoke to the Italian magistrate Giovanni Falcone. Buscetta provided details that helped prove the Mafia was a well-structured enterprise. Sadly, Falcone was murdered by the Mafia in 1992. His work remains a vital part of the history of the fight against organized crime.

The Mafia is connected to broader ideas about how societies and states function. It can be viewed as a mirror of traditional Sicilian society or as a parallel legal system. Some see it as an "anti-state" that operates alongside the actual government. It is not just one thing; it is a combination of a secret society, a criminal industry, and a social structure. By studying the Mafia, researchers learn how power and trust work in places where official institutions are weak.
