Local community

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A local community is a group of people living in the same place. These people often share common values and work toward the same goals. The word community comes from the Old French word communité. This word comes from the Latin word communitas. In Latin, this meant a gift given together. A community is usually larger than just one household. It can also describe a whole nation or the entire global community.

Being part of a group creates a sense of connection. People feel they have shared responsibilities and common goals. This feeling helps people participate in their towns. It also helps people work together to solve problems. Some groups use online tools to help their local areas. One example is a group called LOCAL. They use the internet to improve local communities.

Writer Robert Putnam studied how these connections help us. He wrote a book called Bowling Alone. In his book, he talks about social capital. Social capital is the value we get from social networks. L. J. Hanifan was a reformer who first used this idea. Putnam says social capital makes a huge difference in our lives. It helps a society work better than a society that does not trust others.

Connections help us in many specific ways. At work, friends can make people much happier. These friends can give advice or help with a promotion. Social connections also help our physical and mental health. Meeting people face-to-face is very powerful for our well-being. Strong relationships can lower the chance of heart attacks or strokes. They can also help prevent depression and seasonal viruses.

Supporting local businesses is another way to help a community. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. When you buy locally, your money stays in your town. This helps local farms and other small shops grow. Local shops also help the planet by reducing pollution. They do not need to move goods as far as big stores. This keeps a community unique and makes it feel like home.
