Community

A community is a group of people who share something important. This might be a place like a village, a town, or a neighborhood. People can also share a religion, certain values, or a specific culture. Some communities exist in virtual space through communication platforms on the internet. These groups help people find their identity and roles in the world. They can be small groups or very large ones, like a whole nation.

In nature, scientists use the word to describe living things. An ecological community is a group of different species interacting together. They interact in three main ways: competition, predation, and mutualism. Competition happens when species compete, and often both lose something. Predation is a win-lose situation where one species wins. Mutualism is when species cooperate so that both sides win.

Archaeologists also study communities to learn about the past. They look for ancient settlements like hamlets, villages, or cities. Since it is hard to see social interactions in old bones, they look at objects. They study things like house types and styles of pottery. They assume people in the same community used similar goods. This helps them reconstruct how people lived together long ago.

People learn how to act within a community through socialization. This is the way people learn the rules and behaviors of their group. Children often learn these patterns from their families first. Schools, friends, and even the media also help with this process. Some psychologists believe the most important time for this is between ages one and ten. Learning these norms helps people trust and work with others.

Belonging to a community can make people feel much better. In 1986, researchers McMillan and Chavis identified four parts of a sense of community. These include membership, influence, reinforcement, and a shared emotional connection. Feeling like you belong can help people stay healthy. The American Psychological Association found that young adults in small communities often feel less depressed. Having a sense of belonging is a very powerful thing.
