There are many different types of family structures. A nuclear family is a married couple and their children. An extended family includes more people like grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Some families are matrifocal, which means they are centered on a mother and her children. Other groups are called blended families when parents remarry and bring children together. Some people even have a family of choice. These are friends who support each other like a real family.

Family life has changed a lot throughout history. Long ago, the most common type was a large group where many generations lived together. In the United States, these multigenerational homes became less common after World War II. They reached a low point in 1980 when only one in eight people lived this way. However, by 2016, that number rose to one in five people. In Canada, about 6% of people lived in multigenerational homes in 2016. These numbers change because of new jobs or the cost of houses.

Different parts of the world have different family patterns. For example, the number of children a woman has can vary greatly. In Niger, the rate was 6.76 children per woman in 2015. In Singapore, the rate was much lower at 0.81 children per woman. Some cultures also have different ways of defining who is family. Some people believe family is only about blood. Others believe a family is any group that feels and functions like one.
