Lineage (anthropology)

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A lineage is a special group of people. These people are all related to one person from the past. This person is called an apical ancestor.

Every member of the group can trace their path back to them. This helps people know who they belong to. It is different from a clan. In a clan, people might share an ancestor but cannot prove it. In a lineage, the connection is clear and documented.

There are three main ways a lineage works. The first way is called matrilineal descent. In this group, children follow their mother's line.

Ambilineal Descent System
Ambilineal Descent System

This group includes a mother and her children. It also includes her children's children. The Minangkabau people in Indonesia use this system. The Khasi people in India also use it. These groups focus on the maternal line for their history.

The second way is called patrilineal descent. This happens when children follow their father's line. The group includes a father and his children. It also includes his children's children. This type of lineage is very common around the world. Many cultures in Southeast Asia use patrilineages. In these groups, the paternal line is the main path for family history.

The third way is called ambilineal descent. This is a bit different because people have choices. They can join their mother's group or their father's group. Some people might even join both. This type is rare in some places like Southeast Asia. However, it is common in places like the United States. It is also common in Western Europe. Some groups use bilineal descent, which is a type of double descent. The Yako people of Nigeria use this. It makes the lineage much larger because children belong to both sides.

Lineages are very important for how societies work. They help decide how property and titles are passed down. This means things like land stay within the family. Lineages also have religious meaning for many people. A person's history can decide their role in a religion. These groups also provide a strong support network. Members have social duties to help one another. This creates a shared identity and a sense of stability for everyone.
