Patriarchy is a social system where men hold the most authority. This power shows up in politics, religion, and the control of property. The word comes from Greek roots meaning "the rule of the father." In some groups, it describes a family led by the oldest male. In a larger sense, it describes how men as a group dominate society.

Sociologists believe this happens through socialization. This is the way people learn how to act in their culture. These learned roles can help keep power in the hands of men.

How did this system begin? It is hard to say because there was no single starting event. Some researchers look deep into the past. They think a division of labor began about 2 million years ago. This might have happened when humans learned to use fire for cooking. Others believe patriarchy grew about 6,000 years ago with the start of farming. Friedrich Engels suggested it grew because men wanted to control private property. He believed men controlled household goods to pass them to their own sons.

History shows many different ways this system appeared. In the Ancient Near East, men held power as far back as 3100 BCE. In ancient Greece, thinkers had very different ideas. Aristotle believed women were naturally inferior to men. He thought women should only serve men in the household. However, his teacher Plato had a different vision. Plato argued that women should have equal education and political rights.

Different cultures also had different rules for women. In ancient Egypt, women had many rights that Athenian women did not. Egyptian women could trade in markets and own land. They could even sit on local courts and sign legal papers. In ancient Japan, power was once more even. People worshipped the goddess Amaterasu and many women held spiritual roles. Later, the way people worshipped changed to favor male gods. This was a major shift in how their society worked.

Since the 18th century, many people have challenged these systems. In the 1800s, women like Sarah Grimké questioned religious texts. She argued that men might be biased when they translated them. Elizabeth Cady Stanton also used these ideas to start feminist thought. She wrote "The Woman's Bible" to offer a new way to read scripture. Today, many writers and leaders still work to understand these social structures. They look at how history shaped the world we live in now.
