Separatism is when a group wants to be separate from a larger group.

Most of the time, this means they want their own government. This is often called secession. Some groups only want more freedom to make their own rules. These groups are usually not called separatists. Instead, they are looking for more autonomy. Separatists often use identity politics to reach their goals. This means they focus on what makes their group special. They believe staying with a larger group might hurt their unique identity.

Groups have many different reasons for wanting to separate. Some people feel deep resentment toward other groups. Others want to protect their culture, language, or religion. Sometimes, people feel they are being treated unfairly by those in power. Money is also a big reason for these movements. A group might want to stop being used for their wealth. Or, they might want to keep their money instead of sharing it. Some groups feel their land was taken in an unfair way. They might also feel the current government cannot support them anymore.

There are several types of separatism in our world. Ethnic separatism is based on shared history or race. This has caused many conflicts in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Religious separatism happens when groups want to practice faith alone. In the 1600s, English Christians wanted to form their own churches. The Pilgrims were also separatists who started a colony in New England.

Gender separatism is another type. Some women choose to live in separate communities to avoid male-led groups.

History shows us many examples of these movements in action. In 1861, the American Civil War began.

This happened after southern states tried to leave the United States. In the 1940s, the British Raj was split into India and Pakistan. This was due to Muslim separatism.

In 2011, South Sudan became an independent country after a long struggle.

These events changed how many people live today.

Separatism can look very different depending on the place. In the United States, some groups have focused on Black racial identity. Leaders like Marcus Garvey have been part of this history.

In North Africa, the Berber people have also sought independence.

Governments have many ways to respond to these groups. They might give the group the independence they ask for. Other times, they try to make life better so the group stays. How a government acts can change the future of a whole region.
