Separatism is the advocacy for a group to separate from a larger collective.

This separation can be based on many different factors. These include culture, ethnicity, religion, race, region, or even gender. While some people use the term interchangeably with secession, separatism usually refers to a full political separation. Groups that only seek more autonomy, or the power to make some of their own rules, are typically not called separatists. Separatist groups often practice identity politics. This means their political activities are based on the shared experiences of their members. They often believe that integrating with a dominant group might compromise their unique identity and their ability to achieve self-determination.

There are many complex reasons why a movement might start. Some groups feel emotional resentment or hatred toward rival communities. Others seek protection from serious harms like ethnic cleansing or genocide. Some people resist oppression, such as when their language or religion is being denied. Economic factors are also very important for strong movements. A group might want to stop economic exploitation by a more powerful group. Conversely, a group might want to avoid economic redistribution from a richer area to a poorer one. Some groups believe their nation was added to a larger state through illegitimate means. They may also feel the state has betrayed their interests or can no longer support them.

Ethnic separatism is a common type of movement. It is often based on linguistic, cultural, or religious differences. These movements have been significant in history and have caused conflicts in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Geographical or socioeconomic separatism is another form. This includes movements like Catalan independence in Spain or the Quebec sovereignty movement in Canada.

Other examples include the Berber separatism in North Africa or the Bougainville independence movement. These groups often seek to establish their own distinct territory or state.

Gender separatism is a more complex concept. Feminist separatism involves women choosing to separate from institutions that are male-dominated. Some feminist or lesbian separatists have chosen to live in intentional communities or cooperatives.

Queer nationalism, or gay separatism, seeks a community that is distinct from other social groups. There is also the MGTOW movement, which is sometimes considered a form of male-gender separatism. These groups focus on creating social spaces that are separate from the broader society.

Religious separatism occurs when groups want to withdraw from larger religious bodies. They may wish to interact primarily with people who share their specific faith. In the 16th and 17th centuries, some English Christians wanted to separate from the Church of England. These people were known as separatists and included the Pilgrims who settled in New England.

Zionism is another example, seeking a Jewish homeland. The Partition of the British Raj into India and Pakistan was also driven by Muslim separatism.

In India, the Khalistan movement sought a Sikh homeland during the 1970s and 1980s. This period included violent events like Operation Blue Star in 1984, which caused many casualties and deep anguish.

Race-based separatism is another significant category. Some groups seek to separate along racial lines and oppose integration in schools or businesses. In the United States, Black separatism has been a prominent movement. Leaders like Marcus Garvey and organizations like the Nation of Islam have advanced ideas of Black racial identity.

The Chicano Movement also sought to recreate Aztlán, a mythical Aztec homeland. On the other hand, white separatism in the United States and Western Europe seeks to limit nonwhite immigration to ensure the survival of the white race.

History shows how these movements can lead to major changes or conflicts. In 1861, the American Civil War began after southern states attempted to secede from the United States.

In more recent history, the struggle for South Sudanese independence ended with a referendum in 2011.

Governments respond to separatism in various ways. They might choose to grant the requested independence. Other times, they may try to improve the group's circumstances to keep them within the state. The outcome often depends on political leadership and social factors.
