Secession is a big word for a very important idea. It happens when a group leaves a larger country or political group.

This group wants to become its own independent state. Sometimes this happens through peaceful talks and agreements. Other times, it can lead to violent fighting or war.

A group starts this process by making a formal declaration. This is a public statement saying they are now independent. The main goal is always to create a new, separate entity.

There are many different ways that secession can look. Some groups leave a large federation of many states. Other groups might leave a unitary state that has one central government.

A group might be located in the middle of a country. This is called enclave secession because it is surrounded by the old state. Other groups are near the edge, which is called peripheral secession. Some groups leave all at once, which is called dissolution. In other cases, only one part leaves, which is called partition.

Many things changed in the 20th century to make secession more common. Political scientist Bridget L. Coggins found four main reasons for this. First, ethnic groups became more organized to seek their own states. Second, large empires found it harder to keep control of their colonies. Third, some secessionist movements grew much stronger and more powerful. Fourth, many states and international groups began to agree to these demands.

Some scholars also say that finding new resources helps. New states can also get help from the United Nations or the World Bank. This makes it easier for small new countries to survive and prosper.

Philosophers and leaders have debated if secession is right or wrong. In 1991, Allen Buchanan wrote about the morality of political divorce. He said secession might be okay if a group is being treated unfairly. This often happens to groups that were conquered in the past.

Some people believe in "Choice Theory," which says any group can choose to leave. Others believe in "Just Cause Theory," which says it should only happen to fix a great injustice. Former President Thomas Jefferson once said he would rather states separate than stay in a union that causes war. President James Buchanan also spoke about how a union must live in the affections of its people.

People also argue against secession for several important reasons. Some say it might make the remaining country harder to defend. Others worry that it could lead to chaos or a lack of order. There is also the idea of "distributive justice." This means wealthy areas might not want to stay with poorer areas. Some leaders worry that losing land might hurt the state's ability to provide for its people. Even if a group wants to leave, the original state might have spent a lot of money on roads and buildings there. These are the many sides of a very complex topic.
