A lord is a person with authority or power. This person might act as a master, a chief, or a ruler.

The word has a very interesting history. It comes from an Old English word called "hlaford." This word originally meant "bread-keeper." It comes from "hlāfweard," which means someone who looks after the bread. This shows how old leaders worked. They provided food for all their followers.

In the past, people used a system called feudalism. This system had many different layers of power. An overlord was a person who held land. A person called a vassal held land from that overlord. A man could be a lord to his own tenants. At the same time, he could be a vassal to a king.

This created a chain of people serving one another. One person might be a lord of a manor but still serve a higher king.

After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the title "Lord of the Manor" became common. This title was linked to a place called a manor. The lord ran a special court for the manor. This court made the rules for everyone living there. The lord was the leader of this manorial court. In some very old times, these lords even had power over life and death. Today, the British government still recognizes some of these old titles. They are kept in a special land registry.

In the United Kingdom, "Lord" is also a title for members of the peerage. There are five main ranks of these people. They are duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. Most barons are simply called "Lord" instead of their full name.

Some people use the title as a courtesy. This means it is a polite way to address them. For example, a younger son of a duke might be called "Lord." These people are not always members of the peerage themselves.

Many different groups use the word "Lord" today. The House of Lords is a part of the UK Parliament. It has two main groups of people. The Lords Temporal are members of the peerage. The Lords Spiritual are leaders from the Church of England.

Even judges in some countries use the title. In court, people might say "My Lord" to show respect. This shows how much the word still matters in law and government.
