A lord is a person with power. They can be a ruler or a chief.

Beowulf - hlaford
Beowulf - hlaford

The word comes from an old English word. It meant "bread keeper." This was because a leader gave food to his followers.

In the past, many people lived under a system called feudalism. In this system, a lord might own a large piece of land. This land was called a manor. The lord of the manor made rules for the people living there. Some lords were very powerful. They could even decide on punishments for people.

In the United Kingdom, "Lord" is also a special title. Some people in the peerage use it. There are five main ranks of peers. These are duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. Most barons are called "Lord" instead of their full title.

There is also a group called the House of Lords. This is part of the UK Parliament. It includes many people with titles. Some are called Lords Temporal. Others are called Lords Spiritual. These are leaders from the Church of England. Even some judges are called "Lord" to show respect in court.
