A wife is a woman in a marriage.

Some people use the word "spouse" for both partners. This helps make the word neutral for everyone.

On her wedding day, a woman is called a bride.

After the ceremony, she is a wife. If her partner dies, she is called a widow. If a marriage ends, she may be called an ex-wife.

In many places, wives use their partner's last name. In other cultures, families exchange money or gifts. This might be a dowry or a bride price.

In some parts of South Asia, these gifts are still common today.

Laws for wives have changed a lot over time. Long ago, men often made the big choices. They controlled the money and the children. Many people worked hard to change this. In the 1980s, countries like Spain and Greece passed new laws. These laws helped make things fair for both partners. Now, many nations treat husbands and wives as equals.
