He is a spouse to his partner. In many places, a husband and wife form a family. Most people follow a rule called monogamy. This means they have only one spouse at a time.

In the past, roles were often different. Many husbands were the heads of the home. They were the main people who earned money. In some cultures, they also protected servants and animals.

Today, things are changing. A husband may not be the only one who works. His spouse might earn more money instead.

Different religions have different views. In Islam, husbands are seen as protectors of the home. In Christianity, a husband has duties to lead his family. In Hinduism, marriage is seen as a bond for seven births.

A man is a husband as long as he is married. If his spouse dies, he is called a widower. If they divorce, he is called an ex-husband. Many people wear a wedding ring to show they are married.
