A husband is a man in a marital relationship. He is often called a spouse. In many parts of the world, people follow the rule of monogamy. This means a person has only one spouse at a time.

This role can change depending on your culture or the time in history. A man is a husband as long as he stays married. If a spouse dies, the man is called a widower. If the marriage ends through divorce, he is called an ex-husband. Some people wear a wedding ring on their finger to show they are married.

The word husband has a very old history. It comes from Middle English and Old English words. It also comes from the Old Norse word "hus" which means house. It also uses a word that means to dwell. So, the word originally meant a householder. In the 14th century, a similar word called husbandry meant taking care of a home. Today, we use that word for farming or using resources wisely. This shows how the word has moved from the home to the wider world.

In the past, the role of a husband was often very different. In ancient Roman or medieval times, a husband was often the head of the house. He was expected to protect his wife, his children, and even his servants.

In some old cultures, a husband might receive a dowry or pay a bride price. A dowry was money or goods given to help start a new home. If a husband was unkind, he might have to return the dowry to the wife. In Western history, husbands often had more legal rights than their wives. Many wives were not seen as legally independent people.

Different religions have special views on what a husband should do. In Christianity, a husband has duties to protect his wife and lead his family. In Islam, husbands are seen as protectors of the household and their wives. Islam allows a man to have up to four wives if he can be fair to them. In Hinduism, marriage is seen as a bond that lasts for seven births. Before 1951, divorce was not allowed in Hindu marriages. In Japan, laws changed in 1898 regarding how property was handled in a marriage.

Today, many societies are changing how families work. In modern Western culture, husbands and wives often have equal rights. A husband is not always the only person who earns money for the family. Sometimes, a wife might have a job that pays more. This is a global trend in how families are structured. In some places, laws help ensure that both people are treated fairly after a divorce. These changes show how the idea of being a husband is always growing and evolving.
