Some groups use specific rites to bless the couple. For example, many Christian groups have a ceremony to show their intent to marry. This might include prayers and Bible readings. Some couples even sign a formal declaration of intention.

Engagement has a very long history. The roots of European practice are found in Jewish law. In the Talmud, marriage had two separate parts. The first was erusin, which was the betrothal ceremony. The second was nissu'in, which was the actual wedding.

Today, engagement connects to many different religious traditions. In Judaism, the betrothal is often part of the wedding ceremony. The groom gives the bride a ring or another object. In the Catholic Church, a betrothal was once seen as a binding contract. In Eastern Orthodox churches, the priest blesses the couple with lit candles.
