An engagement, or betrothal, is a specific period of time. It begins when a marriage proposal is accepted. It ends when the wedding ceremony takes place.

During this interval, the couple is often called fiancés. This term comes from the French language. Other names for the couple include the betrothed, the intended, or the affianced. A man is called a fiancé, while a woman is called a fiancée. This stage serves as a transition between being single and being married.

The mechanics of an engagement vary based on cultural norms. Historically, many matches were arranged by families. In these cases, the couple might have no input at all. In other settings, the couple might have the power to veto the match.

Negotiation often involves financial elements like a bride price or a dowry. In many European-influenced cultures, these traditions have evolved into the simple exchange of an engagement ring.

Other cultures, such as those on the Arabian Peninsula, still include these negotiations as part of the formal marriage contract.

There are several distinct stages and types of betrothal. For some, the engagement is a very short period. It can even last only a few hours if it is part of the wedding day. For others, it can span several years. In some neo-pagan groups, a duration of one year and one day is common. In historical instances of child marriage, a betrothal could last from infancy until the person was old enough to marry. The responsibilities of the couple also change during this time. They often spend time together to learn about one another. In colonial North America, the period sometimes functioned as a trial marriage.

The history of engagement is deeply rooted in ancient laws. European practices find their origins in Jewish law, specifically the Torah. In the Talmud, marriage consists of two separate acts. The first is erusin, or kiddushin, which is the betrothal ceremony. This act changes the interpersonal status of the couple. The second act is nissu'in, or chupah, which brings the legal consequences of marriage.

Ancient Greece also practiced rituals called gamos and engeysis. However, Greek contracts were verbal rather than written. Later, Roman marriage law adopted the tradition of giving a ring from Jewish practice. The fiancé would present the ring after swearing an oath of intent.

Religious significance plays a major role in how engagements are handled. In Judaism, the erusin and nissu'in were often separated by up to a year. In modern times, the betrothal is usually part of the wedding ceremony itself. The groom gives the bride a ring or an object of nominal value. In Christianity, many denominations offer a Rite of Betrothal. This is an optional service to bless the couple's intention.

In the Catholic Church, a betrothal was historically viewed as a formal, binding contract. In Eastern Orthodox traditions, the rite often happens in the narthex, which is the entranceway of the church. The priest blesses the couple with lit candles and exchanges their rings three times.

Engagements can be legally complex and sometimes carry heavy consequences. A betrothal is often considered a "semi-binding" contract. In medieval Europe, exchanging vows in the future tense could form a betrothal. However, sexual intercourse could turn those vows into a binding marriage. There are specific reasons why a betrothal might be invalidated. These include the discovery of a prior marriage or evidence of infidelity. Failure to meet financial stipulations can also end the agreement. In the past, some legal systems allowed a partner to sue for a breach of promise. This was known as "heart-balm" in some common law countries.

Today, the concept of engagement connects to broader social shifts. Many cultures are loosening old restrictions regarding physical contact between partners. In many places, the emphasis has moved toward personal choice. People are now more likely to leave relationships that are not fulfilling. While some traditions still use engagement gifts, like the baskets seen in Bangladesh, many focus on the individual bond.
