Husband

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A husband is a man involved in a marital relationship. He is commonly referred to as a spouse. This role is an institutionalized status that lasts as long as the marriage remains valid. In many parts of the world, heterosexual monogamous marriage is the primary norm. This means a man and a woman form the basic unit of a family. Most modern legal systems enforce monogamy by prohibiting bigamy or polygamy.

The term "husband" has deep linguistic roots. It comes from Middle English and Old English. It also traces back to the Old Norse word "hus," meaning house. It combines with a word meaning to dwell. Therefore, the word etymologically means a householder. In the 14th century, a related term called "husbandry" referred to the care of a household. Today, that term describes the judicious use of resources or the science of agriculture. This shows how the concept moved from domestic care to managing entire systems.

Marriage involves specific legal and social mechanisms. After a valid wedding, the participants acquire the status of married persons. In heterosexual marriages, the woman is called a wife. In same-sex marriages between males, each man is called a husband. A husband is different from a groom, who is only a participant in the ceremony. A husband also differs from a father. While a father is defined by his relationship to his offspring, a husband is defined by his legal bond to a spouse.

Historical marriage customs often involved the exchange of property. In some heterosexual marriages, a family might provide a dowry to the husband. Alternatively, a bride price might be paid to the wife's family. A dowry helped establish a new household. It also acted as a protective measure for the woman. If a husband committed grave offenses, he was often required to return the dowry. In some historical cases, a husband might leave a dower to his wife. This was often a third or a half of his estate to support her as a widow.

Religious traditions provide specific frameworks for the husband's role. In Christianity, the Bible outlines several duties for a husband. He is expected to protect his wife physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He is also tasked with leading his family toward good things. In Islam, husbands are viewed as protectors of the household and their wives. Islamic law allows a man to have up to four wives, provided he can be just to all of them. This is the only major religion that puts a specific cap on polygamy. In Hinduism, marriage is viewed as a relationship lasting for seven births. Before 1951, divorce was not permitted in Hindu marriages.

Societal structures regarding gender and law have shifted significantly over time. In premodern Western history, husbands often held paternalistic authority. They were often the heads of the household and primary providers. In these cultures, wives were often not recognized as legally independent. For example, before the Meiji Civil Code of 1898 in Japan, most of a woman's property passed to her husband. In modern secularized Western culture, the rights of spouses have become more equal. A husband is no longer automatically the sole breadwinner. This change reflects a global trend in evolving gender roles.

Legal consequences exist when the marital bond changes or is broken. If a spouse dies, the man is called a widower. If the marriage ends through divorce, he is called an ex-husband. In many contemporary legal systems, the wealthier spouse may have to provide alimony. This is financial support for a former spouse after a separation or divorce. Additionally, a husband is often legally responsible for his spouse's children. In many states, he is automatically assumed to be the biological father. These laws ensure that responsibilities continue even when the marriage relationship ends.
