A nuclear family is a specific type of family group. It usually includes two parents and their children living in one home.

Some people also call this an atomic or conjugal family. This group is different from an extended family. An extended family includes many other relatives like grandparents. In an extended family, people often share their time and money.

This sharing can help reduce stress for parents. It also provides more adult support for the children.

We can find clues about these families in history. Scientists found DNA in bones at a site in Germany. This site is about 4,600 years old from the Stone Age.

The DNA showed a family with two parents and multiple children. In England, these families were common starting in the 13th century. Young adults there often saved money to move into their own homes. This helped them be flexible and mobile to find new jobs.

The term "nuclear family" is actually quite new. The word comes from "nucleus," which means a core or a nut. The dictionary says the term appeared in the early 1900s. Merriam-Webster dates it to 1924. The Oxford English Dictionary finds it in 1925. Many people think of a mother, a father, and children. However, definitions can change over time. Some groups now include same-sex parents or adopted children.

Family roles have changed a lot through the years. In the past, men were often the main breadwinners. Women usually stayed home to care for the children. Today, many women also work to earn money for the family. In North America, the number of nuclear families is decreasing. In 1960, 73% of children lived with married parents. By 2013, that number dropped to 43%.

Many people now live in "postmodern" families. These include single-parent homes or couples without children.

Many things affect how families live today. The cost of houses and school has gone up quickly. Since the 1950s, it has become harder to be stable. Even families with two incomes face high living costs. Where people live can also change family size. A study in Japan found that rural women often wanted more children. Women in urban areas often wanted fewer children.
