A sibling is a relative who shares at least one parent with another person.

If the sibling is male, they are called a brother. If the sibling is female, they are called a sister. A person who has no siblings is known as an only child. Most people in society grow up with their siblings. This often leads to the creation of very strong emotional bonds. These relationships can be quite complicated because many different things influence them. These factors include how parents treat them and their own personalities.

There are different ways that siblings are related to one another. Full-siblings are the most common type and share both biological parents. They are considered first-degree relatives because they share about 50% of their DNA. Half-siblings share only one parent, which makes them second-degree relatives. They share about 25% of their DNA with each other. Twins are siblings that are born from the same single pregnancy.

Identical twins come from the same zygote and are genetically identical. Fraternal twins are no more genetically similar than regular siblings. There is even a rare group called three-quarter siblings. This happens when one parent is shared and the other parents are also related to each other.

People have studied the history of the word sibling for a long time. The word was used in Middle English as far back as 1425. However, it had not been used for a long time before it was reintroduced. It reappeared in 1903 in an article within a publication called Biometrika. It was used as a translation for the German word "Geschwister."

Scientists also use the term consanguinity to measure how closely people are related. This term helps describe the genetic connection between different family members. By looking at genes, researchers can see how much DNA is shared.

There are many specific facts about how these connections work in science. On average, full-siblings share about 50.28% of their DNA. This number can change slightly because of a process called chromosomal crossover. Because of this, some siblings share more than 52.76% while others share less than 47.8%.

In the past, laws in England treated half-siblings differently regarding property. They used to receive only half as much as full-blood siblings. While England has abolished these unequal laws, they still exist in Florida. These rules were part of old English common law regarding inheritance.

Many people wonder if the order in which you are born matters. This idea is called birth order, which is your rank by age.

Some people believe first-borns are leaders and youngest children are charming. Two researchers, Francis Galton and Alfred Adler, studied these theories in the past. Galton wrote about this in his 1874 book about scientists. However, modern scientific studies have not found clear or consistent proof. Most scientists now view these personality claims as pseudo-psychology. It is very hard to prove if birth order really changes a person.
