Niece and nephew

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Families have many special names for people. A niece is a girl in your family. A nephew is a boy. They are the children of your siblings. Siblings are your brothers or your sisters. These children call you an aunt or an uncle. This is a second-degree relationship. This means you are one generation apart.

Blood connections can be measured with numbers. If your sibling is a full sibling, you share 25% of your blood. This is true unless you are related by marriage. If they are a half-sibling, you share 12.5% of your blood. Some people also have half-nieces or half-nephews. These are children of your half-siblings. They share that 12.5% amount of blood.

Words for these relatives have long histories. The word nephew comes from French. That word comes from the Latin word "nepos." This is where we get the word nepotism. Nepotism means having loyalty to your family. The word niece comes from Old French. It also comes from a Latin word. These French words replaced older English words.

New words can help us describe families better. A person named Samuel Martin suggested a new word in 1951. He suggested the word nibling. This word is a cover term for both nephews and nieces. It is a gender-neutral term. People use it for non-binary relatives too. It is not very common outside of specialist books.

Different cultures use these roles in unique ways. In some places, uncles and fathers share duties. They might both care for sons and nephews. The Tai So community teaches weaving to nieces. They also teach daughters and nieces-in-law. Some Garifuna people teach languages to their nieces. In Manus Province, being a niece is very important. This role can be more important than marriage.
