Niece and nephew

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A niece is a girl in your family. A nephew is a boy. They are the children of your sibling. A sibling is a brother or a sister. These children call you an aunt or an uncle.

Some people use a new word. They call these kids a nibling. This word is for both boys and girls. It can also be used for non-binary relatives. This term was suggested in 1951 by Samuel Martin. He wanted a word to cover both nephews and nieces.

Families share many things in different cultures. In some places, people teach nieces how to weave. The Tai So community does this. They teach daughters and nieces. Some Garifuna people teach their nieces a language. In Papua New Guinea, a woman's role as a niece is very important.

There are other family words too. A grandnephew is the grandson of your sibling. You can also call them a great-nephew. If the child is from a half-sibling, they are a half-niece or half-nephew. These relatives are related by 12.5 percent by blood.
