A male sibling is a brother. A female sibling is a sister. People with no siblings are called only children.

Full-siblings share both biological parents. They are the most common type. Half-siblings share only one parent. This means they share one mom or one dad.

Twins are siblings born from the same pregnancy. Identical twins are genetically the same. Fraternal twins are no more similar than regular siblings.

Scientists study consanguinity, which is how closely people are related. Full-siblings share about 50% of their genes. Half-siblings share about 25% of their genes. There is also a rare type called three-quarter siblings. These people share one parent, and their other parents are also related.
