An orphan is a child who has lost their parents. This can happen if parents die or if they are unknown. Sometimes, parents may also leave a child behind. People use different words to describe these situations. In everyday talk, many people only use the word for children who lost both parents. However, groups like UNICEF use different names. They call a child with one parent a maternal or paternal orphan. A child who has lost both parents is called a double orphan.

Many hard things can cause a child to become an orphan. Wars and large sicknesses often lead to this. For example, the Second World War caused many deaths. In Europe, estimates say between 1,000,000 and 13,000,000 children became orphans. In Poland, there were about 300,000 orphans during that time. In Yugoslavia, there were 200,000. Other countries like Germany and Italy also had many. Poverty can also be a reason why children lose their parents.

Different parts of the world have different numbers of orphans. In developed countries, orphans are not as common. This is because most children there expect both parents to live. In places facing war, like Afghanistan, there are many more. In 2001, Uganda had over 1,700,000 orphans. In Malawi, the number was 937,000. In Botswana, there were 98,000 orphans in 2001. Sickness like AIDS has also been a major cause in many places.

Many famous people in history were orphans. Some became great leaders, like Pedro II of Brazil. He lost his father, Pedro I, when he was nine years old. Other orphans became famous writers like Edgar Allan Poe or Leo Tolstoy. You might also know famous athletes like Babe Ruth or Ray Charles. Even many superheroes in comic books are orphans. Batman and Spider-Man are both examples of heroes who lost parents. These stories often show how orphans go on big adventures.

Because of these challenges, many religions teach people to help orphans. The Bible and the Quran both have rules about this. The Bible says to be joyful and include the fatherless at festivals. The Quran tells people to treat orphans with kindness. It also says to manage an orphan's property in their best interest. Many religious leaders, like Moses and Muhammad, were orphans themselves. These teachings show that helping children is a very important job.
