Orphanage

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An orphanage is a special kind of home. It is a place where children live when they cannot stay with their biological families. This might happen if parents have died or are not around. Sometimes, families face hard times like illness or poverty. In these cases, the children need a safe place to grow up.

Today, many countries try to help families stay together instead. They use something called foster care to find homes for children. This means children live with a family rather than in a large building.

In the past, different groups took care of orphans in different ways. Long ago, the Romans formed some of the first orphanages around 400 AD. In the Middle Ages, many children were cared for by the Church. Monasteries and bishops helped look after them. As children grew older, they often became apprentices. This meant they lived with other people to learn a job.

They learned how to work so they could support themselves later.

New kinds of homes began to appear in the 1700s. In 1741, a sea captain named Thomas Coram started the Foundling Hospital in London.

At first, parents would leave a special token with their child. These children were often sent to live with nurses in the countryside. Later, in the 1800s, many children lived in workhouses. These places were often very difficult and harsh. Writers like Charles Dickens wrote about these hard conditions in his books. This helped people realize that children needed much better care.

Many people worked hard to make things better for children. Thomas John Barnardo was a very famous helper in England. He started his first home in 1870 to help homeless children.

By the time he died in 1905, he had 112 homes. He made sure children had food, clothes, and lessons. In the United States, orphanages also grew quickly. The Charleston Orphan House was the first public one in 1790. By 1910, there were over 1,000 orphanages in America.

Many of these were run by religious groups.

Learning about orphanages helps us understand how we care for people today. We have learned that children do best when they have strong bonds with caregivers. Because of this, many large institutions have closed down. This change is called deinstitutionalization. Instead of big buildings, we now focus on adoption and foster care.

This helps children feel safe and loved in a family setting. It is a big part of how modern society works to protect young people.
