People use the word "aunt" in many ways around the world. In some cultures, it is a title of respect. For example, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia use it for Elders. They use the word for senior members of the community. This happens even if the person is not a blood relative. The word itself comes from the Old French word "ante."

Different languages have special names for different aunts. Some languages use one word for all aunts. Other languages use different words for a mother's sister and a father's sister. In Arabic, a mother's sister is a "khālah." A father's sister is called an "ʿammah." In Hindi, these are called "Mausi" and "Bua."

Other aunts in stories are not very nice. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are villains in James and the Giant Peach.
