Parenting is the way adults support a child's growth from a baby to an adult.

This work helps a child develop physically, socially, and emotionally. It also helps them learn and grow their minds. While biological parents are the most common caregivers, many other people can step in. An older sibling, a grandparent, or even a family friend might provide care. Sometimes, children live in foster care or are raised by people who are not related to them by blood.

This shows that parenting is about the act of caring, not just being a relative.

There are many different ways that people choose to raise their children. These ways are often called parenting styles. These styles create the emotional feeling or "climate" inside a home. One way to look at this is through the work of a psychologist named Diana Baumrind. She first proposed three main styles: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. Later, researchers added a fourth style called uninvolved.

These styles are based on how much a parent uses rules and how much they respond to a child's needs. Each style can affect a child's mental health and well-being in different ways.

Different styles have very different results for children. Authoritative parenting is often called the "just right" style. These parents use a balance of support and rules. They use positive reinforcement and do not use punishment very often.

Children in these homes often do very well in school and social life. On the other hand, authoritarian parents are very strict and rigid. They demand obedience and often use punishment without much explanation. In 1983, Baumrind found these children might be more prone to stress. Permissive parents are the opposite, as they are very soft and have few rules. While these children are often happy, they might struggle with self-control because they lack structure.

Other specific ways of parenting have been identified by researchers. Some people practice material parenting by using gifts to show love or to punish. Others might use intrusive parenting, where they try to control a child's every thought or feeling. There is also a concept called unconditional parenting. This idea was made popular by Alfie Kohn in his 2005 book. He argued that parents should focus on love and reason rather than rewards and punishments.

This approach views parental love as a gift rather than something that must be earned.

Parenting is always changing as the world changes. Cultural values and social norms play a huge role in how families live. For example, some communities use storytelling as a very important way to teach children.

In some places, like Germany, parents might spend a lot of time in face-to-face talk. In prehistoric times, a style called trustful parenting may have been the most common. This involved letting children explore and learn from their own mistakes. As human history moved from hunting to farming and industry, the way adults guide children has continued to evolve.
