In the past, barons held land from a king. This land gave them money and power. They often had to provide military service to the king. Barons were also part of the king's council. This council later became the Parliament of England.

In England, the title came after the Norman Conquest in 1066. At first, it meant a man who served the king. Over time, the rules for the title changed. Later, kings gave titles through special letters.

Some members of royal families are also barons. For example, William, Prince of Wales, is the Baron of Renfrew. This shows how the title is still used today.
