In many places, nobles lived just below royalty. A king or a government often gave this status to people. Many times, the status was hereditary. This means children inherited it from their parents.

In the past, nobles often held large amounts of land. This land might include forests, fields, and big castles. They used the money from the land to live.

Nobles often had special jobs. They might serve in the military or the government. In some places, they did not have to pay certain taxes. They also had the right to hunt on the land.

Many nobles had special titles. These titles include names like "Prince," "Lord," or "Lady." These names helped people know their rank. In the past, some nobles could even fight private wars. Today, things have changed a lot. Most countries do not give nobles special legal powers. In many places, being a noble is just an honorary title. It is a part of history rather than a way to rule.
