In the Middle Ages, dukes were very powerful. In some lands, they were the top officials. They were even higher than counts. In England, King Edward III made many dukes. He gave titles to his sons. One was the Duke of Cornwall. This title is still used today for the king's eldest son. Another is the Duke of Lancaster. The king holds this title too.

Today, very few dukes rule as monarchs. Most dukes are part of noble families. A woman with this title is a duchess. In Sweden, royal children get a dukedom at birth. The title remains a very important rank in many places.
