Long ago, a Graf ruled a piece of land. This land was called a county. Some Grafs were very powerful. They ruled large areas in the Holy Roman Empire. These leaders could even vote in the Imperial Diet. This was a group that helped run the empire.

There were many different kinds of counts. A Margrave was a leader who ruled near a border. A Burgrave was a leader who looked after a castle.

In Russia, a leader named Peter the Great used this title too. He gave the title to people to honor them. One of the first was Boris Sheremetev in 1706.

Today, things have changed. In Germany, these titles are now part of a person's last name. In Austria, the law says people cannot use these titles. In places like Belgium, the title is still used. It is often given by a king or queen.
