The word can mean a prince, a king, or a duke. It comes from an old Germanic word for king. At first, a knyaz was a leader of a tribe. Later, it became a title for rulers of whole states.

In Bulgaria, Boris I used this title after he became a Christian. His son, Simeon I, later chose the bigger title of tsar. In Kievan Rus', the main leader was called a Grand Prince. This was a Velikii Knyaz. As time passed, the title changed in many places. In Russia, it was a title for noble families. In the 18th century, Russian emperors gave it to special people. In some places, like Serbia, it was a name for a village leader. Even today, the word is used in many books to mean a prince.
