It is the oldest known Slavic alphabet. A monk named Cyril created these letters in the 9th century. He wanted to translate religious texts into the Slavic language. Cyril and his brother Methodius were sent to Great Moravia as missionaries.

The name comes from an old word meaning "utterance" or "word." The letters have many unique shapes. Some people think the letters were made using circles, triangles, and crosses.

Other ideas say the letters were inspired by other scripts.

After Cyril and Methodius died, their students moved to the Bulgarian Empire. There, they helped spread the script. In some places, like Croatia, the script was used for a long time. It stayed alongside other ways of writing until the 14th century. In some areas, it lasted even longer. Later, it was used for secret codes. Today, scholars still study these letters to learn about history. They show us how people shared their faith and stories long ago.
