Many people use Serbian as their first language in ten different countries. Over 7 million people call it their mother tongue.

Serbian is special because it uses two ways to write. This is called digraphia. People can use the Cyrillic script or the Latin script.

Both ways are used for reading and writing. The Cyrillic script is a big part of Serb culture.

A man named Vuk Karadžić changed the language in the 1800s. He wanted people to write exactly how they speak. He made the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet much simpler. He added six new letters to match sounds perfectly.
