Most rooms have a large table and many chairs. Many tables are shaped like a rectangle. They often have two big chairs at the ends. Other chairs sit along the long sides.

In the Middle Ages, people ate in a great hall. This was a very large room. It could hold most of the people in a house. The family sat at a high table. This table was on a raised floor called a dais. Other people sat in order of their rank. These halls were busy and full of people.

Today, dining rooms are often near the kitchen. This makes it easy to serve meals. Some tables have a removable leaf. This part lets you make the table bigger for guests. In small homes, people might use a breakfast nook. This is a small area for eating. Some homes even have a breakfast bar. This is a counter used for meals. Many people use these rooms for special days.
