A cupboard is a piece of furniture. It keeps things like dishes or food inside.

Long ago, they were different. They were open tables with shelves. People used them to show off plates and cups. These old tables often had one to three tiers. They also had drawers for extra space.

Some cupboards are built into a room. They do not move. In the United Kingdom, you might find one under the stairs.

Other cupboards stand on their own. A linen cupboard holds things like sheets and towels. It can be a small space in a wall. It can also be a piece of furniture.

There are also special types of cupboards. An airing cupboard is built into a house. It holds a water heater or a boiler. It has slatted shelves. These gaps let heat move around. This helps dry clothes and keeps them from getting damp. Some people use them to dry wet shoes, too. An office might have a stationery cupboard. This is a safe place for tools like pens and paper.
