Seats come in many shapes. Some have a back to lean on. Some have armrests for your arms. A chair is a seat with a back. A stool has no arms or back. A couch is a long and soft seat. You can also call a couch a sofa.

Many seats are made for special uses. A throne is a seat for a king. A bishop uses a seat called a cathedra. People use a saddle to sit on animals or bikes. An ejection seat helps a pilot escape an aircraft. A wheelchair is a seat that moves. It helps people who are disabled.

Designers use science to make good seats. They use ergonomics. This is the study of how things fit the body. They measure the distance from the buttocks to the lower leg. This is called the buttock popliteal length. This help tells them how deep a seat should be. This makes the seat more comfy to use.
