Some people say this happens because of how we are raised. They call this socialization. This process helps set roles for men and women. Many people believe these roles keep power in the hands of men.

In the past, many groups were more equal. Some researchers say the division of work began long ago. This might have happened when humans learned to use fire. Others say it grew when people started farming about 6,000 years ago.

In ancient Egypt, women had many rights. They could trade in markets. They could also own land and sign legal papers. But in ancient Greece, things were different. The thinker Aristotle said women were not as good as men. He thought men should lead.
