A curtsy is a special way for women to show respect.

To do it, a girl or woman bends her knees. She may also bow her head. In the past, women used this to greet royalty or elders.

Some women even held their skirts out while they moved.

In the Victorian era, women wore very large, heavy skirts. They used a move from ballet to curtsy. They kept their backs straight and pointed their knees out. This helped them lower down evenly. Today, the curtsy is less common in daily life. It is still used in royal ceremonies. Women may curtsy when meeting a king or queen.

Dancers use the curtsy to show thanks, too.

Ballet dancers curtsy to say thank you for the applause. Some Scottish highland dancers and Irish jig dancers curtsy too. In square dancing, women curtsy to greet their partners. This is a kind way to start a dance.
