Gender role

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A gender role is a set of social rules. These rules say how a person should act based on their sex. People often link these roles to ideas of masculinity or femininity. These expectations can change what clothes a person wears. They can also influence the jobs a person chooses to do. Gender roles even affect how people act in their relationships.

How these roles work can vary a lot between different groups. Many cultures only recognize two genders, like men and women. However, some non-Western societies recognize a third gender. The Buginese society has even identified five different genders. Some people also identify as androgynous, meaning they have both male and female qualities. Other individuals may feel they have no gender at all.

Researchers have studied how these roles began and changed. In 1955, a researcher named John Money used the term "gender role." He believed that biology did not automatically decide a child's role. Later, Talcott Parsons created a model to show different family styles. His Model A showed a total split between male and female roles. His Model B showed a world where these roles were completely joined.

History shows us that these rules are not permanent. For example, King Louis XV of France wore boy's clothes in 1712. Today, people would call that cross-dressing. Many groups, like feminist movements, work to change unfair rules. They fight against ideas that are sexist or oppressive. They want to make sure people have more freedom in life.

Gender roles are also linked to how people are treated in society. Some studies look at the gender pay gap in different laws. For instance, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 used many feminine words. In contrast, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 used masculine words. These patterns can affect how people experience their daily lives. Even today, people are constantly renegotiating these roles through their actions.
