Effeminacy

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Effeminacy describes when boys or men show feminine traits. These traits include certain roles, behaviors, or appearances. Society often links these specific qualities to women or girls. This can include how a person dresses or acts. People in many parts of the world have used these labels to judge men. It is important to know that gender expression is separate from sexual orientation.

In ancient times, people used these ideas to talk about power. In ancient Greece, some leaders used labels to attack their rivals. For example, a man named Aeschines in 346 BC criticized another man's clothing. He said the clothes were so soft they looked like women's clothing. In Rome, certain habits were seen as effeminate. These included wearing perfume or shaving eyebrows. Romans also believed men should show great self-control during pain.

Different parts of the world have different rules about this. In China, the term for girly men is niang pao. In September 2021, the Chinese government made a new rule. They told TV stations not to show "sissy men" in commercials. In the United States, social rules often affect how boys act. Research shows that some gay boys are treated harshly for being "sissies." This can make them feel very bad about themselves.

History shows how these social groups change over time. Before the Stonewall riots, some gay men used "camp" or fashion. They might use soft voices or dress in special ways. After Stonewall, a "clone culture" became more common. This culture often preferred men who acted more masculine. Some people even linked masculine behavior to health choices. For instance, early reports on HIV/AIDS showed different testing rates between men and women.

Today, new words like "femboy" have appeared online. This word is a mix of "feminine" and "boy." It became popular by the 1990s and grew with the internet. A femboy might wear skirts, dresses, or thigh-high socks. Many people use this term to describe themselves in a positive way. They also use cosplay to dress as different characters. This shows how people continue to express themselves in new ways.
