Gay men are men who are attracted to other men.

This part of human identity has existed for a very long time. Some people use the word "gay" to describe these men. Other groups use it to describe all people attracted to the same sex. In the past, people used different names like "inverts" or "uranians." Today, many gay men live openly and find great success. Some are leaders of large companies like Apple. Others serve as heads of state, such as the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.

History shows that men have loved men in many different cultures. In ancient Egypt, a couple named Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum lived around 2400 BCE.

Art shows them in a very close, nose-kissing pose. In ancient China, stories of men loving men appear in books from 600 BCE. Some writers in the Ming dynasty even said these bonds were very harmonious. In the Middle East, ancient Sumerian priests called gala performed special songs. They sometimes took female names and spoke in a female dialect. These men were part of the culture in the temples of the goddess Inanna.

However, many parts of history were very difficult for gay men. In ancient Greece, the thinker Plato argued that male homosexuality was unnatural. In Rome, some laws were strict about how men acted. By the year 390, the Roman Emperor Theodosius I made a law against certain men. Later, in 558 CE, Emperor Justinian made the rules even broader. In much of Europe, many religious groups saw these behaviors as wrong. From the late 1200s, some places even used the death penalty. This made life very hard for many people during those times.

In the Americas, things changed when Spanish explorers arrived. Before this, groups like the Aztecs and Mayas had different views. In Aztec stories, a deity named Xochipilli was a symbol for gay men.

The Spanish explorers used the local customs to judge the native people. They brought new laws that were often very harsh. In Mexico City, the Inquisition arrested many men in 1658. On November 6, 1658, fourteen men were sentenced to death. Many men had to hide their true selves to stay safe.

Today, the world is a very different place for gay men. In many Western countries, people work hard for fairness and rights. Many cities hold large parades called Pride events to celebrate.

These events help people feel proud of who they are. But life is still not easy everywhere. In large parts of Africa and Asia, many men still face unfair treatment. Some countries even still have very strict laws against them. People continue to work toward a world where everyone is treated with respect.
