A society is a large group of people living together. They often share the same land or political authority. These groups follow shared rules called norms. Norms help people know which behaviors are acceptable.

People in a society build special relationships. They also create institutions to help the group work. Working together lets people do things they could not do alone. This cooperation is a key part of human life.

Societies work through many different roles. People specialize in certain jobs to help everyone. This is often called the specialization of labor. Some societies have different ways of governing. They also have different ideas about family and gender.

As societies grow, they often become more complex. Larger groups with extra food can have different social levels. This means some people may have more power than others.

Humans have been social for a very long time. Some biologists say humans are like ants. They call this being eusocial because we live in highly organized groups.

We are different from chimpanzees in many ways. For example, human males often play a parental role. We also use language to communicate complex ideas. Humans build nests like towns or cities to live in. These permanent homes help our social structures grow.
